Prepare a Return to Work plan

Your Return to Work plan should:

  • Describe what you will do to help your employees return to work
  • Be based on the treating doctor’s recommendations and have his/her approval
  • Be developed in consultation with your employees

If a treating doctor declares your employees able to work, but not in their usual job, you must also endeavour to find them suitable duties while they recover. They could involve:

  • Elements of their usual job
  • Reduced hours
  • Different duties
  • Training

When looking for suitable duties consider:

  • What the doctor has said your employees are capable of doing
  • The age, education and skills of your employees
  • Where they live
  • The type of duties that benefit your business, keeping in mind you must not give your employees demeaning tasks
